About JACS

Allen J. Bard (b. 1933) became the 11th JACS editor in 1982 , a position in which he served for 20 years from 1982-2001. Bard shares his roots with the ACS itself, being a native of New York City and receiving his B.S. from City College of New York in 1955. He received his M.S. in 1956 and Ph.D. in 1958 from Harvard University. Dr. Bard continues to pursue active research and publish that research in JACS and is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include electroanalytical chemistry, kinetics and mechanisms of electrode reactions, semiconductor electrodes for solar energy conversion, electroorganic chemistry, electrogenerated chemiluminescence, photoelectrochemistry, and heterogeneous photocatalysis and photosynthesis. I wanted to maintain the very high standard in the papers that were in it, and I think weve done that. But I also wanted to make it a more general journal. Its certainly gotten much bigger, and more international. These were changes that, rather than being conscious editorial decisions, reflected the changing face of chemistry itself. In 2011, Dr. Bard won the National Medal of Science, one of the highest honors a scientist can receive and given to people who have made incredible contributions to science or engineering. He was presented with the award in 2013 by President Barack Obama, who described Dr. Bard as an inspiring innovator. Current Associate Editor Jean M. J.
