Island Weiss offers a custom, one-on-one service, bringing his 30+ years of experience and knowledge to his long list of repeat and distinguished clientele. Specializing in emerging to mid-career contemporary artists, the gallery focuses primarily on painting and sculpture. Island Weiss Gallery also showcases secondary market artworks, particularly 19th and 20th century American and European paintings. The intimate and private setting of the gallery allows an unprecedented close-up and personal interaction with the rotating selection of masterworks and special exhibitions. Drawn to art at an early age, Island Weiss attended the Corcoran School of Art in his hometown of Washington, D.C., and later the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he graduated with a degree in sculpture and founded his first gallery at the age of 22. In 1980, Weiss partnered with the late visionary Tony Goldman, launching Greene Space Gallery in New York City. A pioneer in the burgeoning SoHo art scene, the gallery was among the first to showcase visual and performing artists under one roof. Weiss began acquiring and dealing in contemporary and 19th and 20th century British watercolors in Middleburg, Virginia before teaming up with Hollis Taggart Gallery in Georgetown, DC to spearhead their newly developed contemporary division. He then played a key role in bringing the gallery to New York City's Upper East Side. In 1995, Weiss opened his own gallery in Manhattan.
