The International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC), based in Beijing, was jointly initiated and established by the Chinese government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other international organizations in May 2005. The IPRCC is designed to provide a platform for knowledge sharing, information exchange and international c... ollaboration in the areas of poverty reduction and development. Specifically, the Centre work is mainly focused on four key areas: research, exchange, training and cooperation. All of these areas aim to optimize poverty reduction policies and strategies through an intensive research programme, facilitating and strengthening international exchange and collaboration by organizing a wide range of activities, and promoting knowledge sharing and South-South learning through organizing a series of training courses. Through these areas, the Centres overall goal is to enhance poverty reduction process and contribute to world wide poverty reduction. The Chinese Government attaches considerable importance to the IPRCC. On September 14 2005, at the UN 60th Anniversary Summit on Development Funding, Chinese President Hu Jintao, in his remarks entitled Common Prosperity through Prevalent Development, noted that, "the International Poverty Reduction Center in China was established this May in Beijing with a mandate to contribute to worldwide poverty reduction." At the 9th ASEAN+China, Japan and Korea Summit on December 12 2005, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declared that "the UNDP has established a regional poverty reduction center in China, and China will hold the second ASEAN+3 High-Level Seminar in 2006 with the purpose of facilitating collaboration with other countries to reduce poverty." During the Shanghai Global Conference on Scaling Up Poverty Reduction in May 2004, the Chinese State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development (LGOP), Ministry of Commerce and UNDP signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing IPRCC.
