I have watched the climate of todays classroom change dramatically over the last decadestudents are bombarded and distracted by technology and extracurricular activities, media portrays unrealistic views of modern life, and students look for immediate responses and results from their learning experiences. At the same time, performance expectations... have risen, which requires greater focus and motivation for both teachers and students. What to do? Over twenty years in classrooms at all levels helped me become masterful at content and classroom management, but it didn't give me answers to overcome student apathy and the demand for instant gratification. I decided to pursue a master's degree to look for answers, and while I gained valuable experience, insight and methodologies, it wasn't until I attended my first PBL training that I found what I was looking for--a model that authentically involves students in the learning process and resolves many of the dilemmas faced by today's classroom teacher. My career in the PBL classroom began in a seventh grade science class, which led me first to a job as a teacher at Belton New Tech High School, an all-PBL campus. I soon became a curriculum leader and instructional coach on the same campus. Because Belton New Tech is a member of the New Tech Network, a national organization that promotes the project-based learning model, I became a certified New Tech Network teacher, and recently became certified as a New Tech Network trainer. I have subsequently led project-based learning workshops for my district, my campus, and for statewide associations, and have been invited to give PBL presentations at events for other districts in Texas.
