Inns and restaurants dedicated to the serving of foods or victuals began to emerge in the UK in the 1700's at the onset of the Industrial revolution. These early restaurants devel... oped from the long history of Inns and Taverns but were distinguished by their emphasis on providing meals and refreshment rather than accommodation. Restaurants or inn type accommodation has been developing since Greek times. A notable mention can be found in the biblical account of the Nativity story. However, it was in Roman Britain that a familiar pattern of inns and lodgings, the early forerunner of the restaurants and food establishments we recognise today, began to develop. These early Inns opened alongside newly built Roman roads and within the main towns. Their purpose was to provide accommodation and lodgings for Roman officials on state visits. Their main function was accommodation rather than food. However, after the decline of the Roman Empire and the onset of the Dark Ages the need for Inn or Restaurant type accommodation declined. Travel was restricted mainly to the small minority embarking on religious pilgrimages. Nevertheless, Hotel and Board and Lodgings style accommodation did continue to develop alongside the growth of the Abbeys. These provided basic accommodation alongside the main roads, in towns or close to the Abbeys. Continuing the religious theme, many private Inns, the forerunner of today's restaurants and hotels, developed along pilgrimage routes. England's oldest Inn is "The Trip to Jerusalem" in Nottingham. It dates from 1189 and is so called as it served as the meeting place for Crusaders prior to their long journey to Jerusalem with Richard the First (Lionheart). Other early private Inns include the George (1395) at Norton St Philip in Somerset, the Spread Eagle (1430) at Midhurst in Sussex and the Mermaid (early 1500's) at Rye.Read More
