Island Express Helicopters has been operating tours, charters and exclusive Catalina Island trips for over 30 years. The operation began in 1982 serving only Catalina Island and during that first month carried 31 passengers with John Moore, the previous owner, answering phones, flying the helicopter, and delivering the passengers by van into Avalon... . Currently, besides the company's Catalina Island operation, the company service all of Southern California with exclusive use heliports at the Queen Mary in Long Beach and the Catalina Cruise terminal in San Pedro. In April 2013 the company opened a new terminal at Orange County Airport. The company fly three six-passenger helicopters that are turbine powered, sound proofed, with leather interiors for comfort. The company also maintain the company's own maintenance facility with three mechanics at Long Beach Airport. The company has a total of 21 employees, including four pilots who are certified flight instructors. The company's operations also include servicing the offshore oil platforms off Huntington Beach, and custom flights for movies, commercials, location scouting, land searches and of course the company's tours and charters. The company fly approximately 3200 hours a year from the company's heliport at the Queen Mary.
