The House of Hope is a Christian based two year transitional housing program for single mothers experiencing homelessness and their children. We provide support and individualized case management to each of the women to help them identify the steps necessary to achieve a safe, stable and secure home for themselves and their children. While in the p... rogram, the women receive support, guidance and assistance with employment, education and life skills. Safe housing, food, clothing, one-on-one counseling, community referrals and assistance in locating appropriate childcare is also provided for the women. Women are required to work and/or attend school full-time. They are also required to attend in-house groups and meet weekly with a case manager. With two years of support, guidance and stability, women are equipped to make the needed changes in their lives to reach their goals and sustain permanent housing for their families. The House of Hope consists of two houses in which these families reside. The house at 222 Walnut Street in Waterloo has seven apartments and has been in operation since 1995. The house at 306-308 Walnut Street has three apartments and opened its doors in 2001. Why is the House of Hope so Important? The House of Hope is the only agency in the Waterloo area offering personalized case management and two year transitional housing services to homeless women and their children. Our program allows women the opportunity to complete the steps necessary to achieve their goals, including attending school, finding jobs that pay a living wage, paying fines/debt, or completing community service. Ultimately, we support the end of generational poverty. The children of women exiting our program are more likely to grow up in stable homes with their needs met and the ability to attend school and develop career aspirations of their own.
