Hippo Studio

Hippo Studio is a family-run business and is based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. We hand-make and paint our ceramic tableware and home accessories. In our designs, we take our inspiration from our natural heritage; and through our local decorators, we bring something of the culture to each piece. Each item is an original piece of artwork. We have many des... ign collections. Our colours are vibrant and echo our environment. Every piece is hand-signed by the decorator and has a permanent stamp; either Chekari or Hippo Studio on the underside. Hippo Studio's 12 permanent decorators are self-employed with the use of the studio's facilities. We also employ a potter, a moulder, and 3 other members of staff who manage the production and other important roles in the entire process of production. The process to create a piece hand-made by the potter, can take up to between 4 weeks to 8 weeks. We have given dimensions to our catalogue images, but some items, being entirely hand-made, may differ very slightly. We use quality clays and under-glazes are certified. Our products are non-toxic and are microwave-friendly and dishwasher friendly. We ship orders, from large to small. For individual order (small-to-medium) we use the door-to-door services of DHL. For larger orders we arrange air or sea freight. We are trying to build, or expand, on our distribution where there is an interest in African art and craft.
