The gypsum wallboard industry has been using recycled material for its face and back paper for over 40 years. Paper tape used to cover joints is also made out of recycled paper. In the early 90's, gypsum companies discovered that pot ash, the residue from coal fired power plants scrubbing there exhaust for clean air, was almost pure gypsum. Prior to this time, pot ash was hauled to the dump. It is now converted into "by product" gypsum wallboard. Almost 80% of the wallboard shipped into the Atlanta market and installed by Heritage Drywall is made through this process. This discovery resulted in wallboard plants being built nearer to metropolitan areas, further reducing the carbon footprint by reducing trucking. Almost all the wallboard shipped into the Atlanta market is shipped within the Leeds required mileage calculation for regional materials and resources. In addition to wallboard, joint compound and the metal used for corner beads are all manufactured locally further reducing the carbon footprint caused by trucking.
