Hayseed Acres

Hello! It's nice to meet you. We are Jerry and Kari McFarland. We live in Onalaska, Washington and started Hayseed Acres in 2017. We both grew up in a small farming community in Northern California. We wanted to find a healthier way to feed our family than overpriced grocery store organics or pesticide and GMO filled foods, so we started doing some... research. Our first venture into the farming industry was to start Hayseed Acres Rabbitry and we tested our green thumbs with a fairly successful small back porch vegetable and herb garden. We wanted something more than our small urban lot would allow, so in 2017 we purchased several acres of raw undeveloped land that we could nurture and develop. It has been a slow laborious process filled with back breaking work and a lot of sweat and tears, and it is finally starting to pay off. In October 2020 we finally got our electricity hooked up, so things are really moving forward now! In 2019 we expanded operations to include Hayseed Henry, raising chickens and selling eggs. We started with 27 chickens, and with help from unknown sources (though the dogs had some suspiciously feathery waste for a few days) we dwindled rapidly to 7. We now have a flock of chickens and beautiful rooster, and not only have several loyal private customers, we have our first grocery store carrying our eggs. We raise New Zealand/California cross, Lions Head, and Rex rabbits and currently sell the meat through on-farm sales. We have successfully achieved WSDA certification for both our rabbit meat and our eggs. In fact, in case you missed it on our home page, we are the only Department of Agriculture certified rabbit meat provider in all of southwest and central Washington. We began breeding KuneKune cross pigs and now sell them in the form of both weaner piglets and block hogs. We are currently working on our goat herd and look forward to starting our fruit and vegetable crops as we develop both a seasonal outdoor garden and a year-round greenhouse.
