Hawthorne Elementary School is a total Title I school and is unique in its diversity and success. The vision of the school encompasses its rich history as specific standards-based and data-driven instruction prepares our students to be successful and productive citizens. Our theme, If it is to be, it is up to me, has allowed Hawthorne to realize that what we collaboratively plan, develop, and assess for our students is not only critical to their success, but to our community, state, and nation! Our theme simplifies our vision to a point that everyone can understand, grasp, and embrace it! Our vision is a growing, maturing statement that describes broadly how we are going to utilize every tool available to make intelligent choices in curriculum, the use of data, training, professionalism, and technology to support all of our students and their families. Our recent successes can be attributed to many things, one of which is the method in which we utilized both district and state diagnostic reports and instructional data to pinpoint areas that were difficult for students. We formed grade level plus teams that met and still meet monthly to collect and analyze student work samples, and plan together our next course of action. After analyzing student work, we devise instructional strategies and support materials to focus instruction in that particular area. For the last two years, teachers have provided an extra hour of prescriptive instruction after school for at-risk learners, as well as Homework Fun Club with Cal Poly tutors. Many of our teachers and staff share ideas, collaborate on curriculum, attend workshops and trainings together, and make state standards an everyday part of their instruction.
