Great Adventure

We are supported by an advisory board of Catholic leaders, and every Great Adventure Bible study has been granted the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, indicating that they are free from doctrinal or moral error. Although its authors and instructors are well steeped in Catholic biblical scholarship, The Great Adventure is catechetical in nature and does... not treat Scripture in a purely academic manner. Given its catechetical and evangelistic nature, The Great Adventure focuses on the final form of the text, using what is often referred to as a canonical (or narrative) approach to Scripture. This is an approach emphasized in the Pontifical Biblical Commission's 1993 document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church. The authors of The Great Adventure recognize and employ diverse methods of biblical interpretation to help discover both the human and divine aspects of Sacred Scripture. For the beginner to best understand the intentions of the human authors, whom God inspired, special attention is given to the historical circumstances, culture, and modes of writing (see Dei Verbum 12). As such, The Great Adventure always seeks to use history and its related fields of study to shed light on the biblical text. I am impressed with the methodology and growth of The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible. The canonical approach that The Great Adventure employs is a marvelous way to introduce the faithful to salvation history. When Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium are all brought together in study, the result is a clearer picture of God's will, resulting in a road map for living. The Great Adventure, being faithful to Dei Verbum (the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on Divine Revelation), is bearing much fruit in the Church today and contributing to a stronger, more informed laity.
