In 2010, Recreation PEI launched the go!PEI initiative with the support of the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Government of Prince Edward Island. Its focus was on providing healthy living opportunities to help all Islanders make simple healthier lifestyle choices to improve their overall health. The go!PEI initiative has taken many forms si... nce its inception; it has however stayed true to promoting healthy living choices. During our earlier years, go!PEI worked with close to 20 communities to provide free community programs across the province to get Islanders more physically active. This network has since been consolidated to seven dedicated partners: the cities of Charlottetown and Summerside, the towns of Cornwall and Stratford, and the three regional sports and recreation councils (West, Central and East), to span the Island. The initial programs focusing on walking, running, hiking, biking and healthy eating were first offered at no cost with the goal of building local interest and leaders. Many of them have since taken root and, through the leadership of our seven partners, are now run by volunteers, getting Island communities more physically active. As go!PEI has established itself as strong proponent of physical activity for Islanders, we have been focusing on connecting Islanders to programs and resources to make healthier lifestyle choices. Program delivery continues to be the priority for our community partners. Their efforts can be seen through the expanded range of program offerings with the go!PEI characteristics of making recreational physical activity opportunities reasonable to no cost, available to all Islanders of all ages in communities across the province. Today, you will find a mixture of traditional popular programs such as Learn to Runs with new, fun, creative, and diverse offerings from childrens after school, moonlight snowshoeing, kayaking, yoga on the beach, older adult fitness and much more throughout the year.
