The award is named in honor of the great Jesuit priest, Father Pedro Arrupe, whose life personified service to others and who is often referred to as the Second Founder of the Jesuits and recognizes a Gonzaga graduate who has lived his life in service to others and meets the standards of Being a Man for Others. The Mike Kelleher Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to a Gonzaga senior who excels in academics, sports and service and, as such, exemplifies the spirit of men for others that is so much a part of Gonzaga. John McLaughlin was instrumental as the longtime chairman of the tournament, with his namsake award presented to a committee/tournament volunteer who made significant contributions to the tournament. Service is center to the tournament. Organized and staffed by volunteers with the net proceeds benefiting the service projects of the men of Gonzaga. As we present the 31st Annual Gonzaga DC Classic, we rededicate ourselves to the ideals that drove Michael Kelleher to establish the tournament in 1989 and which strives to embody the Jesuit motto "Being Men for Others." The tournament showcases "Great Basketball Supporting Good Works," with the proceeds of this tournament going to the service projects the young men of Gonzaga participate in every year.
