Transforming public education in Georgetown, Texas. In 2013, our community set out on a bold journey to reimagine public education in GISD. Leaders in business, public service, civic organizations, and education joined parents and community members to create our Strategic Plan , which now guides the districts current and future endeavors. It establ... ished big goals for both students and staff, which seemed rather audacious at the time. But now, six years later, were really seeing the fruits of our labor. Weve made mistakes, yes, but weve learned so much along the way, and now were on the path to creating a system that not only provides kids with a future-minded, world class education, but equally helps them become happy, healthy humans. Ill fight for that over high scores on state tests all day long. My school board journey began in 2014. We had three kids in the district at three different schools, and I was leading the PTA at Annie Purl Elementary. I saw so many kids there growing up like me low income, home alone way too much, no real hope for the future unless something changedI also saw so many kind and caring adults stepping up to be the change, just like the teachers at Berkman Elementary did for me. I realized I could do more. Voters in Georgetown elected me School Trustee, Place 5 on May 10, 2014, and since then, I have advocated for low income and non-English language families every day. Ive pushed for inclusivity in district communications and forums, worked to ensure parity in programs and facilities at every campus, and Im especially proud of the Family Sports Pass , created to lessen the financial burden of having kids in sports. GISD is comprised of more than 12,000 students served by 1,900+ employees. There are a lot of moving parts. We are not perfect, we make mistakes, and we try again. Learning doesnt stop when you leave school, and one of the hardest lessons to learn as an adult is that failure isnt a weakness, its an opportunity for improvement.
