Girls Rule

For a number of years, guided by our values and beliefs, Girls Rule! has provided vital programs to young ladies, particularly those residing in high-risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent and fulfilling lives.... Of the girls the organization serves, 90 percent are girls of color; 35 percent come from families earning $25,000 annually or less; and 37 percent live with two parents. Girls Rule! develops research-based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major programs address math and science education, pregnancy, drug abuse and HIV prevention, leadership, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention and healthy lifestyles. Ladon Thames Brumfield, is a graduate of Morgan Park High School's 7 - 12 grade International Studies and Languages Program and Roosevelt University and currently serves as Executive Director of Girls Rule! Ladon is responsible for leadership and vision as well as managing development, human and financial resources, and programs. She is responsible for developing and maintaining the many diverse internal and external relationships needed to meet meet the needs of the young ladies Girls Rule! serves and the communities in which they reside. She also represents the views and experience of Girls Rule! in forums designed to influence the systems and policies that affect youth. Most recently she served on the Oak Park School District Strategic Plan Adjustment Committee where she developed results based strategies that would make each student an active agent in his/her educational experience. She also serves as a facilitator for the Black Women's Health Imperative where she teaches young ladies and women how to lead empowered and healthful lives.
