He is self taught and has always had a love for computers and graphic design. His knowledge of real life practical application has benefited many of the organizations that he has worked with over the past 3 years. On June 23rd 2010, Derek and his partner Jared met for the first time. Jared has Cerebral Palsy and is also visually impaired. They did... not let disability stand in their way! At that time in Derek's life, he was looking for somewhere to belong. He had dropped out of high school in 2009 and never looked back. He would go on to get his GED in August of 2010. In 2013, Derek was the main guiding force in helping Jared to achieve his own independence. Derek helped Jared to work on his Orientation and Mobility skills with a long cane. His love and support didn't stop there! He would continue to help Jared apply for and receive a dog guide from Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester Hills Michigan. Leader Dog Middleton would forever change their lives and the lives of those he meets. In 2014, Derek went to work as an office assistant for a local auction company. It was here that Derek first found his love for graphic design. He had the opportunity to design countless flyers and and other print materials. He also had the opportunity to begin working with Microsoft Expressions for web design. Once he started working on the web, he was hooked!
