Genus was established in 1996 through a joint venture between Bayer and Schein Pharmaceuticals and began trading under the name "Ethical Generics", marketing a range of niche generic medicines. In 1999, the joint venture was dissolved and Schein Pharmaceuticals acquired products and the trading name "Genus" from Wyeth Laboratories. In 2000, Schein... was acquired by Watson and in 2003, Genus became a part of STADA Arzneimittel AG, the successful pan european pharmaceutical company, based in Frankfurt. During this time, Genus focussed purely on marketing generic medicines. In 2005, a strategic decision was made to diversify the business into branded ethical medicines, resulting in the purchase the same year of the dermatology range of branded medicines from Daiichi Sankyo. In 2007, Genus acquired Britannia Pharmaceuticals which added several major brands to the product portfolio.
