Gauteng Provincial Government

Gauteng Provincial Government is the official governmental administrative body responsible for governing Gauteng Province in northeastern South Africa. Gauteng, meaning place of gold in Sotho-Tswana, is the smallest province in South Africa, covering an area of 18,178 square kilometers or approximately 1.4 percent of the country's total land area.... Despite its small size, Gauteng is the most populous province with a population of approximately 16.1 million people, representing more than a quarter of the national population. The province was formed on April 27, 1994, from part of the former Transvaal province following South Africa's first multiracial elections, initially called Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging and renamed Gauteng on June 28, 1995. The provincial capital is Johannesburg, the country's largest city and financial hub, while the province also contains Pretoria, South Africa's administrative capital. Gauteng is governed by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, a 73-person unicameral legislature elected by party-list proportional representation, which elects the Premier of Gauteng to lead the executive. The Premier appoints an Executive Council of up to 10 members to serve as heads of various government departments responsible for basic education, health, housing, social services, agriculture, and environmental protection. Gauteng is the wealthiest province in South Africa and serves as the economic engine of the country and subcontinent, contributing over 34.8 percent of the national GDP and approximately 40 percent of South Africa's economic output. The province is highly urbanized and serves as the financial services capital of Africa, home to more than 70 foreign banks, major gold and diamond mining houses including Anglo American and De Beers, and extensive manufacturing, industrial, commercial, and service industries.
