We welcome the vital role attorneys play in the community, including the representation of pro bono clients, assisting in matters of public importance, and supporting non-profit organizations. The State Bar agreed with the nomination from the State Pu... blic Defenders office that Gass Weber Mullins readiness to quietly, yet steadily, take on the unglamorous casesto the tune of many hundreds of volunteer hourshas impressed the Wisconsin State Public Defender as worthy of recognition. Year after year, our attorneys dedicate hundreds of hours to pro bono matters in both our state and federal courts. In addition to volunteering their time to teach other lawyers at presentations, Gass Turek attorneys have authored several legal publications. In addition to regular contributions to Wisconsin Lawyer, For the Defense, and other bar journals, our attorneys have written the Wrongful Death chapter in the Law of Damages in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin chapter in Morton Dallers Tort Law Desk Reference: Fifty State Compendium, and the Wisconsin chapter of the DRIs Excess and Umbrella Insurance State-by-State Compendium. The Milwaukee County District Attorney appointed John Franke to serve as the special prosecutor to investigate potential charges against three Milwaukee police officers related to the in-custody death of Derek Williams. The matter was extremely important to the parties and our community. John invested hundreds of hours of pro bono time and presented thorough and well-regarded case to the inquest jury. For more than 10 years, David Turek has been a co-coordinator of the regional high school mock trial tournament sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin. This event showcases high school students from around the Milwaukee area trying a case in front of actual judges and attorneys.
