Gary Magness

Gary Magness is the Chairman of the Magness Investment Group LLC headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The Magness Investment Group is a private holding company that manages Gary's diverse investment portfolio and oversees numerous operating businesses. Gary Magness was born in Texas, the second son of Bob and Betsy Magness who were cattle ranchers at... the time. But in 1956 they sold their cattle and started their first cable system. Bob climbed poles to string the wires and Betsy ran the operation out of their kitchen. Bob and Betsy felt that Montana was a great place to start a new cable company and to raise their two young boys so they moved to Bozeman, Montana in the late 1950's. Bozeman is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park and the family spent many summer vacations camping and fishing there. They lived in Montana until 1966 when the success of their business required that they move to Denver Colorado. Gary grew up alongside the cable business. His first job required him to build microwave towers and string coaxial cable in Montana, Wyoming and Utah. In 1968, the Texas and Montana cable systems were merged into Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) and its subsidiary Liberty Media Corporation. Two years later the company went public and grew to be one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world. Over the years TCI merged with AT&T and spun out Liberty Media Corporation as its programming arm. Liberty Media has since split into several different companies including DirecTV. Gary Magness remains a significant stockholder in the cable industry. Gary Magness pursued an agribusiness degree in college and then followed in the family footsteps to become a cattle rancher. Gary was a hands-on ranch manager who initially raised registered Hereford cattle. In 1981, he made a decision to phase out Herefords in favor of Limousin cattle.
