While she does hold two university degrees, she doesn't attribute her successful Internet marketing and book promotion career to her formal education. She found that when promoting on the Internet, experience is the only thing that actually matters. After major changes began to take place with Google that affected her Internet marketing portfolio, West began writing e-books. She quickly discovered that promotion took more time than any other aspect of self-publishing. So she used her vast Internet marketing experience to test which strategies would be the most effective for promoting indie books. Once she perfected her strategy, she started offering a simple version as a "gig" on Fiverr.com. Going by the name "TheDesertGirl," she offered basic book promotion to members of Amazon's KDP program. In the beginning, submitting to 10 or so large book promotion sites and a handful of specialized tweets were about all that was needed to receive several thousand downloads. Those days are over, however, and it takes more promotion to have that kind of success during your free days today. Changes in Amazon, combined with the exponential growth in the number of e-books, have enormously affected every part of Internet book promotion.
