First Nations Studies Program

First Nations Studies emphasizes respect for community perspectives, systems of indigenous knowledge and the contributions of indigenous thinkers. Students in the program have the opportunity to explore the perspectives of First Nations groups and the perspectives of other cultures and disciplines. We are dedicated to developing the theoretical fra... meworks, cultural perspectives and intellectual skills necessary to address the challenges facing indigenous peoples in a complex world. FNSP integrates community perspectives into its academic program by inviting community leaders and experts join us for special lectures and to participate as guest speakers in courses. Students also have the opportunity to work in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations, as part of their research practicum. The practicum projects provide students with hands-on experience in forming cooperative relationships within and between communities. This experience is beneficial for students interested in working with First Nations peoples, including Aboriginal students who plan to work in their own communities. Through these efforts to bring community members, elders, leaders and thinkers together with students, the First Nations Studies Program commits to developing and maintaining dialogue and relationships between First Nations communities and the university.
