About fifewa.gov

The City of Fife is a municipal water utility serving over 8,200 equivalent residential units within its service area in Washington State. Historically reliant on six groundwater wells, the City transitioned to purchasing all water supply from Tacoma Water after those wells were decommissioned due to declining yield and water quality concerns, including arsenic contamination. However, facing dramatic fiscal pressure from Tacoma Water's approximately 10 percent annual wholesale rate increases over the past 12 years, which have significantly burdened both residential customers and local businessesmany of which support the Port of Tacomathe City determined to restore operational and fiscal independence through development of a new independent groundwater supply. The City recently drilled a 1,000-foot-deep groundwater well capable of producing 1.5 million gallons per day and is currently pursuing Department of Ecology permitting for its operational use. The City recently drilled a 1,000-foot-deep groundwater well capable of producing 1.5 million gallons per day and is currently pursuing Department of Ecology permitting for its operational use. This project encompasses the necessary pumping and water treatment infrastructure to develop and deliver this independent supply, which is projected to meet approximately 50 percent of the City's total future water demand. The anticipated groundwater production will substantially reduce the City's reliance on escalating wholesale rates while generating significant long-term operational savings. With approximately $100,000 in ratepayer funds already invested, the estimated total project cost is $5.5 million; however, when compared against the $4.4 million cost of purchasing an equivalent volume of wholesale water from Tacoma Water, the net incremental investment is only $1.1 million with a payback period of less than two years excluding debt service. Upon completion and full operational status, the City projects annual reductions in operational and maintenance costs of approximately $850,000, demonstrating strong financial returns and establishing a sustainable, cost-effective water supply strategy for residents and businesses throughout its service area.Read More
