Farmworkers Self-Help

Farmworkers Self-Help, Inc. is located in Dade City, Florida. The organization was incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) in 1982. FSH works with immigrant Mexican farmworkers, Mexican-American farmworkers and former farmworkers to formulate solutions to the problems encountered by this population. We also work with other poverty entrapped and oppressed gro... ups in our community. The organization is unique in its holistic blend of organizing and direct service. The organization's focus on social justice began in response to the abusive tactics of the U.S. Border Patrol toward the community members of Mexican descent. FSH was also instrumental in the 1993 enactment of the Farmworkers Right-To-Know bill that allows farmworkers to know of the risks from chemicals and pesticides that they may encounter in the fields where they work. FSH continues to address discriminatory and oppressive policy and practices that adversely affect our community and we continue to work with our legislators as new laws are still needed. The direct services arm came about because of a freeze that left hundreds of families stranded in the area with no work and no money to sustain them. The organization has since had an emergence of other service areas to address the great need. The branch continues to be necessary due to large numbers of seasonal migrating workers who pass through our community as well as the high rate of poverty for the farmworkers who make their home here.Read More
