Farlingaye High School

Farlingaye has been a Maths and Computing Specialist School since 2002. We successfully re-designated in October 2006 and because we are a high-performing school we were offered the chance of applying for a second specialism, consequently we are now an Arts Specialist School as well. Specialist Status will be bringing in a significant amount of mon... ey each year to the school to enhance and enrich the curriculum for students in our school, our partner and feeder schools, and the wider community. One of the greatest impacts has been the continual improvement in the provision of ICT across the school. By September 2006 every teacher will have a lap top and every classroom a computer projector. There are interactive whiteboards in every faculty and each year we install several more. We have nine computer suites and four sets of lap tops for students use. In response to our Arts status we are planning to install over the next two years a Music Technology suite of 30 Apple Mac computers, an English computer suite with media capabilities and a further computer suite for the Art faculty. But specialist status is not just about the school, it's about the community too. We run special days for primary school pupils to try out new ideas in maths computing and science. We have an annual concert that involves pupils from our feeder primary schools performing with our own students. Our facilities are used by many different groups in the wider community and we run a distance learning ECDL course that is free to anyone in the local community. Specialist Status also helps us to run courses for targeted students in our own school: we have a breakfast club for students wanting to improve their maths in year 7, an Easter booster class for high-achieving year 9 students (when we also invite in students from another local secondary school) amongst many others.
