Exergy was founded in 1999 by Dr Paul Bannister with the intention of becoming Australia's foremost technical agency in energy efficiency. Today, the company is acknowledged by the market as the number one experts in building energy efficiency. In the 1990s energy efficiency was still relatively fringe as a discipline, with much talk occurring but... very little real action. This meant that most efficiency work never advanced beyond the production of an audit report, which did little to motivate or improve quality in such work. In founding Exergy, however, Dr Bannister was motivated by the need to provide credible high quality work that could actually be implemented - particularly because many of Exergy's early projects were linked to energy performance contracts, where savings are guaranteed. This led to Exergy developing methods and disciplines far ahead of the field from day one. In line with this philosophy of quality and innovation, Exergy has adopted a strongly developmental view of the industry as a whole and has contributed significantly to the quality and understanding of work in the industry through a high profile in seminars and conferences. Part of this commitment to education is reflected in the company policy of employing work experience students and following through to full time employment. Many high of Exergy's senior staff, including director Chris Bloomfield started in this way and are now recognised industry leaders. One of Exergy's other major contributions to the development of the industry has been in the development of the NABERS Energy and Water Tools for offices, shopping centres and hotels, which have transformed the Australian energy efficiency landscape, particularly in the office sector.
