Ex Cathedra

Ex Cathedra has established an international reputation as a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble, with a repertoire that ranges from the 12th to the 21st centuries, via almost all points in between. We aim to explore, research and commission the finest choral music and to set the highest standards for excellence in performance and training. W... e have become known for our passion for seeking out the best, the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire, for giving dynamic performances underpinned by thorough research, and for our commitment to new music. Ex Cathedra has made a number of highly praised recordings for ASV, Hyperion, Orchid Classics, SOMM Recordings, Signum, and on its own label. Recent releases include Shared Ground, a double CD of music by Alec Roth, and Gabrieli Sacred Symphonies. We have always placed schools and community projects at the heart of our work, and now provide an extensive programme of activity, delivered by a team of expert vocal tutors who are all members of Ex Cathedra. Singing Playgrounds, which we have established in over 450 schools in the UK, China, New Zealand and Thailand, is taking place in almost 200 primary schools across Birmingham during 2012-13. We have secured funding for Singing Medicine at Birmingham Children's Hospital and Birmingham Heartlands Hospital for at least three years. Nurturing gifted and talented singers from our youth training choirs through to the Consort is also very important to us. The Academy of Vocal Music and the Junior Academy regularly appear in our concerts, and perform in their own right. For example, the Junior Academy provide the offstage chorus for Birmingham Royal Ballet's performances of Nutcracker, and the Academy of Vocal Music provide the choir for the annual Swedish Santa Lucia service at Birmingham Cathedral.Read More
