Engineered With Layton

Engineered With Layton (EWL) acted as Prime A/E to manage the entire design team to produce complete construction documents to update and relocate the Emergency Department/Urgent Care Clinic (ED/UCC) at the George E. Wahlen Medical Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The project consisted of 18,000 SF of new construction and 13,000 SF of demolition. The... existing administrative wing will be entirely demolished, resulting in 10,200 SF of relocation of the hospital administration, library, and other miscellaneous functions. The project has been design targeted for LEED Silver certification and has all energy-efficient upgrades to be compliant with current VA energy standards. The EWL Civil team performed site visits on the VA campus in the area adjacent to the proposed project. The team identified underground storm drain deficiencies complicated on previous adjacent construction projects. Our team reviewed the previous design plans, as-built drawings and collected field as-built data to confirm existing design flow conditions and assisted the VA engineering department in managing oversight testing of the drywell system to determine remedial actions necessary to meet local stormwater regulations. EWL provided a final report of findings summarizing the issues of the existing system as designed and installed by others with recommended modifications to the site storm drain design for an overall solution to not only the Urgent Care site, new Urgent Care/ER patient parking lot, but also adjacent building courtyards. Our team utilized swept path analysis software to ensure the design of a new parking lot and curb and gutter was compliant with ambulance entry and exit as well as fire truck access through the patient drop-off and parking area.
