About Energy Lab
Energy Lab at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) focuses on solvation,transport, interfaces, and reaction mechanisms in complex solvents such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. Ionic Liquids (ILs) are salts at liquid state and they have unique properties such as wide electrochemical window, nonflammability, negligible volatility and wide liquidus range which distinguish them from molecular solvents. Their properties can be tailored towards a specific application. Therefore, the development of structure-property relations are essential for the bottom-up approaches to realize renewable energy systems. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have similar properties to ILs, however DESs are not necessarily made of discrete ions. DESs form with a combination of a hydrogen bond donor and a hydrogen bond acceptor. We are interested in the application of ILs and DESs in Energy Storage, Separations, Sensors and Electrocatalysis; in particular the electro-reduction of carbon dioxide.Explore more
