Enactus Saint Marys

Enactus Saint Mary's has started the Finish Hunger campaign to help increase Financial Rationalization, Education, and Equity of the food in Nova Scotia. For the past five years our team has provided the largest volunteer contribution to Feed Nova Scotia for Halifax's Annual Parade of Lights. Our volunteer army of team members, friends, family, and... alumni gathered in November to weather the cold and maneuver crowds of over 100,000 people to collect cash and non-perishable food donations. Volunteers made their way through the cold to attract attention, energize parade crowds, and increase awareness of the campaign. We plan to continue this great effort again this year and help ensure families are fed around the holidays. Our team also collects donations of cash and food on behalf of Feed Nova Scotia through other events such as the Great Canadian Food Fight, the Q104 Hunger Strike, and A Day without Lunch. A Day without Lunch is a morning event in early spring that spreads awareness on the food concerns some Nova Scotians face daily by encouraging community members to donate what they would normally spend on a daily lunch. Last year, Enactus Saint Mary's raised 51,000 pounds of food and this year, we cannot wait to continue and promote sustainable sources of long-lasting hunger relief! We also, started an on-campus smoothie stand where we encourage everyone to "Shake your Morning Up" by beginning the day properly with a quick and balanced breakfast. We give away these smoothies in hopes that students and faculty will take action on their own time and not compromise hunger and nutrition for convenience. Finish Hunger also works with the Enactus Saint Mary's Progress in the Park project. Their efforts to build a community garden in Mulgrave Park will be a long-lasting and sustainable resource for proving nutritious food to a Halifax community.
