The organization was founded in August of 1984 in Detroit, Michigan. The Black Alumni Chapter of the EMU Alumni Association was the first formally organized alumni group. The organization has evolved from a grass-roots association, organizing car washes and selling barbecue dinners, to the present-day activities of holding major fundraisers. Recent... fundraising events include a private reception at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History featuring Judge Greg Mathis, another featuring former Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix and Detroit City Council member Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, and our annual Scholarship Golf Outing. The purpose of the Black Alumni Chapter is to provide scholarship awards to financially challenged yet academically deserving African American and minority undergraduate students at Eastern Michigan University. Our objective is to build a solid foundation supported physically, intellectually and economically by alumni and their affiliations and through corporate sponsorship. In addition to planning/coordinating fundraising activities, EMUBA has endeavored to offer programs to support and encourage student achievement: student orientation/graduation ceremonies on-campus career presentations/mini-lectures; networking opportunities with alumni provided meals/admission for scholars at annual luncheon purchases student table at EMU annual Alumni Awards banquet Some of the organization's on-going efforts are the career roundtable/ presentations, offering public speaking opportunities to scholarship recipients at the scholar luncheon, establishing alliances through mentorship. Our goals are to enhance mentoring activities, increase on-campus presence and/or access to members and select alumni, increase scholarship fundraising dollars through donations, sponsorships, endowments, etc., and job referrals for graduates.Read More
