Empowerment Group

The Empowerment Group is a non-profit organization comprised of an energetic, highly dedicated group of staff, volunteers and Board of Directors. EG was founded in 1999 in response to the collective passion of its founders who wished to improve the landscape of economically distressed communities in Philadelphia. Over the years, EG has been dedicat... ed to assisting individuals to become self-sufficient. The primary way in which EG accomplishes this task is by teaching foundational business skills to practicing and aspiring entrepreneurs, and youth in low-income communities. Empowerment Group has chosen as its strategy of wealth creation, the skill-strengthening of small business owners, and the induction of youth into an entrepreneurial approach to life. We have chosen this path because we know that every community's ability to continuously improve its quality of life is directly tied to the existence of an educated, capable class of local business owners. Empowerment Group is helping residents from low-income communities repair and strengthen their communities from the inside out. The skills that we teach prepare them to become solid entrepreneurs or to be better employees. By creating businesses, they create new jobs and begin to foster economic growth and stability in their communities, counteracting the corrosive cycle that currently exists. The curriculum we have designed for entrepreneurs uses their business as the practical learning ground for teaching quality best practices. The curriculum for youth teaches how to apply entrepreneurial skills in one's own life, and reinforces those concepts through the real-life experience of running a small business.
