EMCOM was founded by Steve Emly in the mid-1970s soon after he invented the first response time monitoring system for the State of Iowa. As the story goes, Steve was a network technician at the time and got into the now age-old debate with the applications programmers. They said the network was slow; he said it was the applications. Not being one t... o let an argument go unfinished, he put his electrical engineering and ham radio expertise together and made his first network monitoring device in his basement. He won that first argument with the applications folks because he had the data to back up his argument. He has been crusading for using real data to troubleshoot network performance and plan capacity expansion ever since.
