About Electronic Toll Collection

Established in 2009, Centurion-based Electronic Toll Collection (Pty) Limited (ETC) was awarded the contract to supply and manage an integrated tolling system on behalf of SANRAL as part of the R25 billion Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP). This ambitious project set out to improve approximately 560 kms of national roads in the Gauteng Province will provide a safe and reliable strategic road network in order to optimize the movement of traffic; freight and road based public transport and consequently provide access to economic and social opportunity. The concept of Open Road Tolling (ORT) was activated in Gauteng on 3 December 2013 with groundbreaking fibre network Roadside System comprising of 43 tolling gantries across 185km of national road networks along the metropolitan areas of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. In 2017 a full interoperability electronic toll collection network was established nationally across 11 Toll concessionaires in the Republic of South Africa introducing a centralised national account management service known as the Transaction Clearing House (TCH) Kapsch Traffic Com, a subsidiary of Kaspch AG which is privately-owned Austrian enterprise listed on the Vienna stock exchange, partnered with Traffic Management Technologies a proudly South African business in the intelligence traffic management sector to establish ETC. The partnership injected capital and operational funding into the design and build of the tolling services including a significant skills development and job creation for over 1200 employees and knock on business opportunities for 1500 South African subcontractors. In October 2017 Kapsch established a Sub-Sahara region of which ETC is now a major subsidiary.
