East Columbus High School

East Columbus is a rural, public high school with an enrollment of 656 students in grades 9-12. The school opened in the fall of 1992, a result of consolidation of Acme-Delco and Hallsboro High Schools. Students feed into this school from Acme-Delco Middle School, Hallsboro Middle School and the Boys and Girls Home School. East Columbus is located... in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, a small, incorporated town in eastern Columbus County, approximately 15 miles east of Whiteville and 40 miles west of Wilmington. The school attendance area includes the towns and communities of Acme, Armour, Bolton, Buckhead, Byrdville, Carver Moore, Council, Delco, Farmer's Union, Freeman, Hallsboro, Lake Waccamaw, Prosper, Rico, Riegelwood, Sandyfield, St. James and Welches Creek. A unique feature of East Columbus is the racial composition of our student body. We have 42.23% Black, 37.04% White, 18.29% Native American, 2.29% Hispanic and .15% Asian. Another feature that sets our school apart from others is the addition of students from the Boys and Girls Home. East Columbus is fortunate to have many teachers with advanced degrees and years of experience. Two of our Teacher of the Year nominees have gone on to win Columbus County Teacher of the Year. The 2000 recipient was also recognized by Walmart & Sam's Club as regional Teacher of the Year and the 2001 recipient received honorable mention for the Chevy Malibu Teaching Excellence Award. One of our teachers has been recognized as the United Negro College Fund Educator of the Year.
