Donaldson Coal was established in 1996 and has mining operations based in the Hunter Valley just south of Maitland, 25 kilometres from Newcastle and Port Waratah. The company's focus is on mining quality thermal and coking coals for the export market. Export marketing is managed through the global network of the Noble Group, one of the world's larg... est commodity trading companies. Approximately 200 people work in the Donaldson open cut mine and the Tasman underground mine. The employee numbers will increase significantly once the Abel underground mine is fully operational. Donaldson Coal works closely with the community, government and other stakeholders to manage environmental and other impacts. Donaldson Coal has been operating mines and projects at stages from feasibility to full-scale production for more than a decade, and the company is gearing up for major expansion. Currently all of Donaldson Coal's export coal is shipped through Port Waratah which is being expanded to cope with higher production from Hunter Valley mines. Donaldson Coal is also a foundation investor in Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) which is building the third coal terminal at Newcastle Port.
