The Office of the District Attorney provides prosecution of cases and assistance to victim... s regarding felony cases. Our office specializes in felony cases in the 17th Circuit Court District, which includes DeSoto, Tate, Panola, Yalobusha, and Tallahatchie Counties. Felony cases can be anything from Bad Checks, Grand Larceny, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, or Murder. Our outstanding Law Enforcement Agencies are the ones that are actually called out to the scene of the crime and take the report. They must first investigate the crime, determine that it is a legitimate case, then they will prepare the file and turn it into our office. Once the file is at our office, the prosecuting attorney will prepare the file for Grand Jury. Our Prosecutors will present the file to a group of Grand Jurors and they will determine if the case is a True Bill or not. If the case is determined to be a True Bill, our office will then go forward with the prosecution of the defendant. If it is determined to not be a True Bill, the case will then resort back to law enforcement for further investigation.
