Discovery School

Discovery School is dedicated to setting students on a trajectory to enter a four-year university by delivering a challenging curriculum in which students not only learn and apply grade level material, but think critically and engage in team problem solving. Our K-8 school has a special focus on the areas of science, technology, engineering, and ma... th (STEM), which will offer students a range of unique, exciting experiences and opportunities. Our students, starting with kindergarten, will learn higher order thinking strategies, and we will assist families in navigating the pathway to college. We draw our kindergarten through fifth grade students from our attendance boundaries, while our sixth through eighth grade classes, also known as the "STEM Academy," are accepted from across the Antelope Valley through an application process. In the STEM Academy, all students take two specialty courses: AVID and Gateway to Technology. AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a class that is specifically designed to prepare students for college. Students engage one another in tutorials, they learn organizational strategies, and they learn to read and write critically. In addition, students participate in field trips to universities across southern California and hear from exciting guest speakers regarding career options. In the Gateway to Technology class, students in the STEM Academy use state-of-the-art computers to learn computer programming, robotics, and principles of flight, among other units of study.
