Discovery Homes was established in 1992. I came to work for Discovery Homes in 2003. By 2008, my wife, Cindy and I acquired Discovery Homes. To own my own business was a lifelong dream though the road was not easy. I worked many jobs over my lifetime. My last job before I became a salesman, was a piece rate machinist. But at 29 years of age, I lost... use of my hands. After a failed surgery on my right hand for carpal tunnel, my wife and I started making the almost weekly journey to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia for tests and therapy. We went there for many years. Then one day, my doctor walked into the room and said Steve, "You have 5lbs. of gripping pressure. There is nothing more I can do for your hands. Without another word, he left the room. My wife and I were stunned but we refused to give up. I knew I had to start thinking outside the box. I managed to convince my remaining doctor to give me a prescription for a massage therapist. It was nothing short of a miracle when we met an incredible lady by the name of Mandy Millar. She had been the massage therapist for the British Olympic team. In four short 1 hour visits, she had my hands to the point to where I could finally close them. Something I couldn't do for years. Mandy was a wonderful human being. Though she left this earth too soon, she will always and forever have a special place in our family's heart. As my hands improved, I got turned down for SSI. Hindsight is always 20/20 and looking back on those years I realize that getting turned down proved to be one of the greatest blessings in my life. After all that time, it was difficult finding a job. I still could only do so much with my hands so my options were limited. The only job I could get was delivering pizza for Little Ceasar's. I was twice the age of everyone else who worked there. It was a very humbling experience.
