Through awareness, education and support, its our mission to help improve the quality of life for those affected by dementia not only individuals, but also their caregivers, whanau and support networks. By providing advocacy and access to information that promotes wellness, increases independence and provides reassurance, we want to inspire and nur... ture a dementia-friendly society, where anyone affected feels supported and prepared for the journey ahead. We know that with this guidance, and the right support around them, those affected by dementia will have the freedom and confidence to continue to make the most of every day. In 1984 a challenge was set: to create a society that provided information, support and education for carers and people with dementia. Inspired by the thought leadership of a passionate advocate with extensive experience in Alzheimers, a local Alzheimers and Related Disorders Society was established. Since then, services supporting Alzheimers and related conditions have been provided to the Auckland community. Dementia Auckland was formed in 2016 after the organisation was renamed from Alzheimers Auckland. With this change, we aimed to offer greater inclusivity and clarity around the support we can offer to those at various stages of the journey with dementia. Despite the name change, our mission has always remained the same: to deliver professional and compassionate support to those whose lives are touched by dementia. The significance of a dementia diagnosis reaches beyond the individual affected. Families, networks and communities have a role to play in ensuring that we provide a safe and supportive society. Dementia is now the third largest cause of death in New Zealand. With 50 million people affected globally, there are nearly 10 million new cases reported every year one every three seconds.
