About Dcspan
In 2013, Davidson County community members including local medical providers, nursing boards, community watch groups, school officials, and various departments within the Davidson County Government, came together to address the rising concern of prescription drug misuse in the county. The group began identifying specific issues and building strategies to address the growing problem. The group began studying evidence-based programs and practices across North Carolina. The coalition ultimately decided to model their initiative after Project Lazarus, a program response developed in Wilkes County to combat the extremely high overdose mortality rate. DCSPAN objectives and strategies were developed and in July 2014, the Davidson County Commissioners signed into effect the DCSPAN initiative and prescription drop box program.
