Dan Hellin Consulting

After having been based in Boston, MA for over 10 years, he moved to Corvallis, Oregon in 2011 and established DHC. Between 2001 and 2011, Dan was a research associate with the Urban Harbors Institute, a freestanding institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, which provides technical assistance and consulting services to national, state a... nd local governments, non-profit organizations, private industries and community groups. While at the institute, he played an integral role as a project manager and analyst in research and planning projects focused on coastal and ocean management; marine spatial planning; port and harbor management; the marine economy and marine industries; policy analysis and development; and natural resource protection. While at the Urban Harbors Institute, Dan managed a number of multi-disciplinary projects. For example, he led the 2010 Massachusetts Recreational Boater Survey, which aimed to produce a better understanding of boaters' use of the coastal and ocean waters of Massachusetts and the economic significance of boating within the state. This interdisciplinary study brought together boating organizations, coastal resource managers, economists, statisticians, geographic information systems experts and software designers to develop a study of the recreational boating community. To complete this survey a series of online surveys and a novel, interactive mapping application were developed to gathered information on routes taken by boaters and their boating-related activities to characterize spatial use patterns and collected information on boater spending. This information will be used to inform decision-making under the Massachusetts Ocean Management Plan.
