Cumberland County was created in 1748 from Salem County. The county seat is located in Bridgeton. The neighboring counties are Cape May, Atlantic, Gloucester, and Salem. The county clerk has divorce records and also has civil court records from about 1903. The County Surrogate has probate records. The County Clerk has records of deed from 1790 to the present. Records of deeds from 1664 to 1790 are in the Secretary of State's office. Copies of wills and administrations of estates beginning in 1804 are at the county courthouses.
