Covpress Holdings Ltd (comprising Covpress Ltd & NCJ Pressings Ltd) has a manufacturing history dating back over a century. Today the company's site in Burnsall Road, Canley, with its autonomous engineering, quality and commercial facilities, covers some eight acres providing 33,000 square metres of manufacturing area. Those who live in the Midland... s are well aware that car makers are mainly component assemblers, buying in most of the thousands of parts they need to put together to make the vehicles they sell. But who manufactures all those pieces? Under a variety of names Covpress has been involved in making metal parts for the car industry almost since the firm was founded in reign of Queen Victoria. The foundations of what would later become the Coventry Radiator & Presswork Company Limited were laid during the last part of the 19th century. The company would play a major part in the development of the automotive industry during its formative years, a hard testing ground of sustained technical progress and rapid expansion. It was in 1890 that two brothers named Jackson, both of whom had originally been in business as scrap metal collectors, began making metal parts such as washers from the scrap they collected. They worked from premises in Trafalgar Street; the firm's present Canley site being occupied from the 1930s. It was however, not until 1912 that the firm known as Coventry Radiator or CovRad properly began. The Jackson brothers' sons would in turn eventually join the business, which would remain under Jackson family management for two generations. Coventry Radiator had begun modestly enough, but it quickly established a reputation for its high quality products. The ensuing years brought increasing demands from the growing motor industry for radiators, presswork, plated parts and many other components.
