Making the decision to meet with a therapist is difficult. There has to be a force within that motivates you to make that initial telephone call or email. If that is not hard enough, what if you have already tried this therapy thing before and did not have positive results? The second time around maybe more difficult. Sometimes it seems as if there is a new counseling center on every corner. Do you need a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a therapist, a counselor or a social worker? By definition, psychiatrists script and monitor medications. A licensed psychologist is trained to conduct IQ tests and a variety of assessments, doing evaluations. A therapist is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. A counselor may be Pastoral, Licensed Professional Counselor, etc. A counselor is identified by a C on licenses. A social worker may be based in referral services or may be an LCSW, or licensed clinical social worker. Research those initials. Certifications are a definite plus. It is always important to look past the licenses and look at additional certifications. These show the providers motivation and interests in perusing additional mastery of specialty therapeutic interventions focused on specific behaviors. Once you find a match, double check their specialties to make sure yours is listed. If you have a doubt, call or email them. The provider should return your call in 24 hours; you want to work with a provider who considers you top priority. Remember it is crucial to keep your scheduled appointments with your provider.
