In 1955, Gabriel Lewis Galindo began producing corrugated cardboard boxes. During this period he established contacts with banana trading companies, which, due to the disease known as Panama disease, were having problems for exporting bunches of bananas, as it was customary to export them back then. As entrepreneur in the packaging field, Lewis saw... an opportunity in the way in which bananas were handled and transported in Costa Rica, given that the product did not arrive in good conditions to its final destination. Hence, Don Gabriel managed to bring together technicians from other international companies that were also producing corrugated cardboard, and they designed the first corrugated cardboard box destined to packaging bananas. This box, known as the Standard Carton, was very well received among banana growers, and the need to produce them in banana growing areas all over Latin America emerged. Today, more than 40 years later, the box is called the telescopic banana carton. The immediate success gave Don Gabriel the opportunity to develop more packaging companies in the region. Thus, Global Packaging Group, and years later, Corbel, were born. With great success, and in view of the need for carton supply, the installation of several corrugated cardboard box factories began. The first factory exclusively producing specialized cartons for the agricultural market was Envases Industriales de Costa Rica, S.A., where, together with Mario Esquivel Arguedas, a partnership was created which is still operating today with its third generation of associates. Corbel was born as ENVACO San José in 1982, for the purpose of tending to the cardboard box needs of the local market. We started out with a 5.000-m2 plant. During the 90s decade, our operations grew to offer products to the free-zone, medical and agricultural sectors. That is how our plant was expanded to 7.000 m2.
