Children who have social skills can show consideration for the feelings and interests of their peers, take responsibility for their actions, and able to communicate clearly, calmly, and respectfully. Social skills are needed for enriching social experiences, and they lessen the chance for negative interactions. Frustration and anger can quickly turn into defiance, disrespect, aggression, and temper tantrums if your child doesn't know how to deal with their emotions. It is important to teach your child the differences between feelings and behavior, model appropriate anger management skills, establish anger rules, teach healthy coping skills, and offer consequences when necessary. Emotional regulation is not something people are born with. This is a set of skills that enables children, as they mature, to direct their own behavior towards a goal, despite the unpredictability of the world and our own feelings.
