Community Arts Ontario

Community Arts Ontario is a multidisciplinary arts service organization and the province's only cross-sectional arts network, representing a diverse constituency of more than 180 arts organizations, agencies, institutions, and municipalities across Ontario, alongside nearly 40 individual artists and public supporters. Founded in 1990 as a volunteer... -led umbrella organization for community arts councils, Community Arts Ontario has evolved into a comprehensive advocacy and support platform that provides a unified voice for all individuals, groups, and institutions committed to advancing arts excellence across Ontario and beyond. The organization offers tailored programs and services designed to meet the needs of a broad range of arts and cultural professionals, community leaders, and municipalities, positioning itself as a critical connector within Ontario's cultural ecosystem. Community Arts Ontario's growth reflects strategic expansion and organizational development; the organization transitioned from its volunteer foundation to establish a part-time executive director position in 1995, and subsequently relocated its headquarters from Ottawa to Toronto in 2000, where it expanded its staff to include full-time leadership and communications support. A pivotal strategic planning process undertaken in 1999 and revisited in 2001 redefined the organization's mandate and broadened its constitutional membership base beyond traditional community arts councils to encompass a wider range of community arts organizations and cultural development contributors. This expansion enabled Community Arts Ontario to deepen its outreach to practicing artists and organizations engaged in community arts work while developing responsive programs and services aligned with its growing and increasingly diverse membership.
