Coe Manufacturing

In 1852 Harold Hayes Coe and Leonard Anderson formed the Anderson and Coe Company in Painesville, Ohio. Although they initially manufactured steam engines and machinery for mills, the introduction of a rotary lathe the late 1850s became a crucial product for their success, and eventually a standard of the Veneer industry. After the Civil War, the C... ompany continued to prosper as the demand for lumber and sawmill machinery in the South and West dramatically increased. The versatility of the rotary lathe was revolutionary, and in 1891 Coes son joined the business that was renamed the Coe Manufacturing Company. At the turn of the century the United States fell into a recession that made profits hard to come by. To combat this, engineers at Coe worked hard to develop a veneer dryer to replace the old system of lofting, racking, or hanging sheets to air-dry the veneer. In 1902 the first Coe Veneer dryer was introduced, drying veneer in a matter of minutes by holding the veneer between steel rollers to keep it flat as it dried. As revolutionary as this technology was, it was the invention of Douglas fir plywood in 1905 that led to the explosion of veneer manufacturers. In 1976 Fred Fields purchased Coe Manufacturing and oversaw development of existing technology through computerized chargers, scanners, and core drives. In 2007-2008 Coe Manufacturing struggled through the global economic downturn, and in 2008 it resulted in USNR acquiring the Coe Manufacturing product line.
